Catherine recently retired from and is a former managing partner of Bernard LLP, one of Canada’s leading law firms focused on the marine industry. Her clients included small local start-ups to large national and international companies operating in the maritime sector such as tug and workboat operators, cargo terminal operators, cargo and passenger carriers, charterers, marine (de)construction companies, as well as governments and other public-sector entities. She frequently advised clients on the purchase, (de)construction, sale, importation, and financing of vessels and negotiated all manner of marine and other commercial agreements, including leases and licenses of crown and federal land. Ship recycling and the development of new federal and provincial law and policy in this area is a particular passion of Catherine’s and she has spoken at conferences and forums in Canada and Europe on this topic.
